The Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is Europe’s largest area of protected night sky. Due to its pristine skies it was awarded gold tier designation by the International Dark Sky Association, making it officially the best place in England for people to go to enjoy the dark skies.
Stanegate Cottage has been accredited as Dark Sky Friendly so we will very shortly be adding a beginner’s stargazing pack including books, binoculars, red lens torches and information on where to stargaze for guests to enjoy during their stay.
Some specific places have been designated because of parking and facilities such as toilets and nearby pubs – take a look at the full list of Dark Sky Discovery Sites. There is one at Cawfields near Hadrian’s Wall, about 12 miles from Stanegate Cottage. The Kielder observatory is also within easy driving distance from Stanegate Cottage, about 30 minutes away.
