Self catering cottage in Harbottle near Rothbury and The Cheviot Hills in Northumberland
Situated in the Northumberland National Park in the pretty village of Harbottle, this single storey cottage is a great base from which to explore the surrounding area including National Trust’s Cragside, The Cheviot Hills, Kielder Water & Forest, Hadrian’s Wall Country and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its many castles. The small, traditional town of Rothbury is 15 minutes away with a good range of amenities, and the county town of Alnwick famous for Harry Potter films, its castle and gardens with tree house restaurant, is 30 minutes away. Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Jedburgh, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Coldstream are all about an hour’s drive, and the Scottish Borders are within easy reach. Newcastle has an International Airport and Port of Tyne has regular ferry crossings to/from Amsterdam. There is a local bus running a rural service between Rothbury and Harbottle.
The castle ruins, forest, river, village pub and shop are a short walk from the cottage. The Drake Stone is visible from the rear garden and is an enjoyable walk from the forest to a hidden lake and woodland beyond. The Cycle routes ‘Pennine Cycleway’ (route 68) and ‘Sandstone Way’ pass the front door and there are some excellent mountain bike routes in the nearby Cheviot Hills, including those used by the Naughty Northumbrian sporting event. The area is also popular for horse riding with riding schools and stables in the nearby villages of Elsdon and Otterburn, and with hill walkers, including the Alwinton Round challenge events and The Pennine Way National Trail.
