Harbottle village, near Rothbury in Northumberland
Situated in the Northumberland National Park in the pretty village of Harbottle, this single storey self catering holiday cottage is a great base from which to explore the surrounding area including The Cheviot Hills, Kielder Water & Forest, National Trust’s Cragside, Hadrian’s Wall Country and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its many castles. The traditional town of Rothbury is 15 minutes away with a wide range of amenities, and the county town of Alnwick, famous for Harry Potter films, its castle, gardens and tree house restaurant, is 30 minutes away. Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Jedburgh, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Coldstream are all about an hour’s drive and the Scottish Borders are within easy reach.
The small village pub, castle ruins, forest and river are a short walk from the cottage, and there are another two pubs in nearby Alwinton, 1.5 and 2 miles away, which serve food. Cycle routes ‘Pennine Cycleway’ and ‘Sandstone Way’ pass the front door and there are some excellent mountain bike routes in the nearby Cheviot Hills. The Drake Stone is visible from the garden, which is an enjoyable walk up from its forest base to a hidden lake and woodland beyond. The area is popular for horse riding with riding schools and stables in the villages of Elsdon and Otterburn.
