“Vindolanda and The Roman Army Museum – Two destinations – One ticket – A great day out”
The Roman Army museum is a great place to start off your visit to Hadrian’s Wall Country. Here you will find a brilliant ‘Edge of Empire‘ 3D film, the perfect place to start as it provides great context about the area.
In addition to the museum itself you will also find a Latin classroom with a hologram teacher and a magic blackboard to give you an fun lesson in Latin, maths and morals! There is a coffee shop at The Roman Army Museum and it is situated on one of the most complete sections of Hadrian’s Wall.
Once you have visited the museum, drive from the holiday let to Vindolanda another day. It is very popular with visitors from all over the world and many come to visit The Archeology Centre and to participate in archaeological digs. Typically these are for periods of two weeks to give archeologists time to find artefacts – there are fascinating finds here including Roman shoes, writing tablets, jewellery and animal bones! The soil here helps to preserve the items.
The Vindolanda Trust has been accepting volunteers onto its excavations since 1970 with over 8000 people having experienced this! Volunteers can either join the excavation team in the trenches, or work with the post-excavation team, handling and sorting through the materials recovered.
